David began experimenting in the late 1980s with gilding and patinas. His patina finish is a hybrid he has developed. It combines painting, gilding (metal leafing), chemical patinas, and lacquering techniques. The complex layers result in something that gives the appearance of an ancient, petrified stone quality.
David has been working on different applications for his signature gilding and chemical patination finish. He had been applying these techniques to his turned vessels and bowls, as well as furniture and sculptures. Lately he has been experimenting on flat surfaces similar to the 4 inch by 12 inch test sample boards that he uses for teaching his techniques. The newer panels are 12 inch by 12 inch and larger, designed to be original works of art appropriate for hanging.
