Favorite Fixtures with David Marks Friday May 19, 6:00 pm – 9:30 pm.
Description: David will do a slide show of an award winning dining table that he built showing the construction process from start to finish. He will discuss about 10 different fixtures that he used to facilitate the construction of a curvilinear design. The table involves 2 coopered columns angled in towards each other and connected with 2 stretchers that are joined with mortise and tenons. It is a knock down design that will allow you to tap the tenons out to release the stretchers. The top is glass and has a continuous strip lamination around it. The fixtures that he used are specifically designed for handling difficult construction of curved work. A light dinner is included so students will have time to visit with David.
Setting Up & Resawing On the Bandsaw with David Marks Saturday May 20, 9:00 am -12:30 pm.
Description: David will perform a demonstration on how to determine the drift of the blade, setting up the fence, preparing stock and resawing veneers on the band saw. He will show you how to accurately cut veneers that are 3/32 of an inch thick. Finally, David will cover bandsaw setup in detail and there will be an open question & answer forum throughout.
Working With “Knifecut” Veneers with David Marks Saturday May 20, 1:30 pm – 5:30 pm.
Description: In this 4 hour demonstration, David will demystify the veneering process, by demonstrating techniques geared to the small shop. He will begin by showing you how to handle veneer safely to avoid damage and then demonstrate how to mix a solution which will stabilize and flatten difficult veneers such as crotch patterns and burls that have become warped, bubbled and brittle. In addition, David will demonstrate proven cutting techniques that will enable you to safely cut and join book matches, slip matches, and radial matches. There will be a discussion of appropriate adhesives, clamping techniques and vacuum pressing followed by a question and answer session
Gilding & Chemical Patination with David Marks Sun. May 21. 9:00 am – 7:00 pm.
Description: Gilding and chemical patination is one of David's signature specialties. This is a hands-on class where each student will receive four sample boards (4" by 12") that they will guild with genuine 22 karat gold leaf, as well as copper, silver and Dutch metal leaf. In the morning the students will work with the traditional oil size method of gilding, as well as explore creative gilding techniques such as the Japanese Notan method of balancing positive and negative spaces. In the afternoon David will introduce the students to the process of chemical patination. The students will learn various cold patina processes and will learn to work safely with mild acids. The processes that the students will learn can be applied to any surface that will accept paint. These include wood, metal, paper, ceramics, glass, even plastics. Students will take home some very innovative techniques to enhance their work as well as some beautiful sample boards.
