David's Summer Schedule

June 8 – 13, 2005 Furniturw Society Conference, San Diego, California

David will be teaching at the annual Furniture Society Conference held at San Diego State University on June 8 thru 13, 2005. The theme of this year’s conference is “The Other Side: A Tradition of Alternatives”. David will be giving an Artist’s talk on Gilding and Chemical Patination on Thursday, June 9th, a Demo on Gilding & Chemical Patination on June 11, and will be teaching an all day, hands on class on Gilding & Chemical Patination on Sunday, June 13th. Finishing For The Craftsman with David Marks

A good quality finish starts with surface preparation and David will show students how to sharpen and use scrapers to produce a smooth finishing surface. David will then show various ways to color the wood using chemicals and dyes such as potassium dichromate, ferrous sulfate and metal acid dyes.

After the wood has been colored David will demonstrate two different types of clear coat finishes; one will be shellac and wax, and the other will be a hand rubbed oil finish. He will also bring examples of lacquer finishes which he will discuss in detail. Don't miss this wonderful opportunity to see this craftsman in action.

David will teach his very popular Band Saw Veneer Cutting, Vacuum Press & Bentwood Lamination class. David will discuss blade drift, setting up the fence, preparing stock and resawing. Then using the vacuum press, he will show how to glue up the veneers for both flat as well as laminating curved stock. Adding curves to your work will broaden your design options.

David will explain the process of bentwood lamination and take you step-by-step through the process of resawing stock to designing forms and getting the glue-up just perfect.

Gilding & Chemical Patinations with David Marks

The processes that you will learn can be applied to any surface that will accept paint. These include wood, metal, paper, ceramics, glass, even plastics. So no matter if you are a jeweler, potter, sculptor, blacksmith or woodworker, you will take home some very creative and innovative techniques to enhance your work and increase your marketability. This is a hands-on class where all students will receive sample boards that they will gild with genuine 22 karat leaf as well as copper, silver and Dutch metal leaf. On the first day students will work with the traditional oil size method of gilding. Students will also explore creative gilding techniques, such as the Japanese Notan method, of balancing positive and negative spaces. On the second day, students will be introduced to the process of chemical patination. David will demonstrate various cold patina processes that students will learn working safely with mild acids. These techniques are very comprehensive and not just limited to woodworkers.

August 22 – 26, 2005: 5 Day Hands-On Class Decorative Bowls and Platter Turning

This class is geared for beginning to intermediate turners. David will guide students through the process of selecting stock, mounting it onto the lathe using faceplates and sharpening techniques for a variety of tools. David will emphasize safe techniques for turning. The class will use bowl turning gouges and scrapers to produce a large assortment of bowls and small platters.. As David takes the class through the design process, students will learn techniques such as carving and laminating, to enhance the work and make it unique.

August 27 & 28, 2005 2 Days Hands On Class Gilding & Chemical Patination

Students will make six 4" x 10" sample boards, one of which will be gold leafed and the rest will be gilded in copper, silver or Dutch metal. On the first day, students will work with the traditional oil size method, learning how to gild. Students will also explore creative gilding techniques such as the Japanese Notan method of creating negative spaces. On the second day, David will introduce students to the process of chemical patination (coloring items to create decorative effects). He will demonstrate safe ways of working with various mild acids to create an infinite array of finishes which can be applied to most materials. The resulting finish produces colors and layers that give an ancient, petrified stone quality.
